Smell of World that has Burned (final version) | sometimes you get dragged out of bed in the middle of the night when something calls out to be worked out , a piece of the puzzle to be filled in. Other times you don’t know why— just an inchoate ache to bring something in where there was nothing before. This painting kept telling me I wasn’t done, though it seemed done to me. More thinking than painting had to be done to make this particular end game happen. Then, it happened.

The Final Version is on top; the first final version (ha ha) on bottom.

Now you know Tumblr being owned by yehhoos. Unrelated, but I’m not allowed on Yahoo or any other yehhoo site including Flicka, because someone in Hong Kong stole my Yehhoosiann id wakart2 and Yahoo thinks that I’m the the thief. Unable to log on to get any traction, however not a big issue, only use Flicka in connection with FilmIsGod Group but would like to get back into that group.

More importantly, my Dad has been sick. You have seen him in photos on this blog as the old white guy, still acting like a jerk at 95. He got heatstroke on Sunday and had to go to emergency room. Taking Keflex for infection. I could not go due to agoraphobia. Choklatstar had to take him.

Don’t usually talk about personal things on blogs or even real life, not so much shy as just generally paranoid and hostile. But to explain why I don’t post, because I feel the work (the art itself) demands to be posted, I have to touch on these personal things, painful though they be to say or hear about. I’m not just barfing for the sake of barfing.

Just when I thought I couldn’t fall in love with Basquiat any further: Jean-Michel Basquiat’s illustration for Maya Angelou’s children’s book, Life doesn’t Frighten Me (1993), aka an artnerd’s dream collaboration. I’m absolutely turning Basquiat’s T-rex into a tattoo.

Every time I think about the collaborations that did not happen, the works that did not get created after 1987 and the unadulterated genius interrupted I start to tear it up and sometimes I break down. In the History of Art in Western Civilization, Painters of such rare genius as Basquiat usually come along no more than once in a hundred years. In the 19th C., a tumultuous period with giants among painters such as Monet, Gauguin, Cezanne, Whistler, nevertheless yielded only one supergenius painter in the shape of Vincent Van Gogh. The last century was unusual to have two in Basquiat and Picasso, though many more so called intelligentsia in art seem willing to recognize the Spaniard than the Haitian-American. There are signs that is changing. Critics are no longer so quick to refer to Basquiat’s work as primitive, neo-primitive, post-primitive or post-graffiti in style. And of course the prices are beginning to sky. But the genius is in the work, not the price. Warhol said that Basquiat was one of very few artists (in the 80’s) who knew how to paint and could paint, not the same things at all. I try not to think of the art he would have made if he had lived as long as Picasso did, —wakartist
